Notes from Jeff Fletcher's Sermon on Father's Day

Proverbs 4--Introduction: Immediately following this text Solomon gives wise advice to his offspring, areas in which they would do well to pay close attention to what he has to say. But what I want to pay close attention to for right now is not what he has to say to his children, but what he has to say about himself. There are at least three non-negotiable items here that must be a part of a father's life if he is to be a Godly influence on his children. Let's look...

1. Live out my faith.

     * In other words, I'm not just going to tell you how to live, I'm going to show you how to live by being an example to               you--I'll lead--you follow.

    * A father's chief priority is for the name of God to be followed in all his life.

2. Know my responsibility.

   * You are the only father your child will ever have--that's not something that can be taken lightly.

   * One of the greatest problems in our society today is derived from men who have decided that they are not responsible       for their children's spiritual upbringing.

3. Communicate my values.

   * Not just referring here to just any type of communications; I'm talking about teaching your children what is at the              core of your belief system.

   * Children don't reach adulthood in a vacuum.
